Laxmii Movie Review: Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani's film Laxmi, before Laxmi Bomb, released today on Disney + Starstar. Director Raghav Lawrence remains loyal to Kanchana, his 2011 Tamil original, which is a remake of Laxmii.
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani
Director: Raghav Lawrence
It is one thing to be recognized on a piece of paper and completely different to be accepted in the real world. The pillar of the third gender may have been incorporated into forms of election, as reminded by the original Laxmii (a brilliant Sharad Kelkar) in the film, but that pillar is still a taboo in the eyes of society. The message that the makers of Laxmii gave is clear - acceptance and love for transgenders. And if equal opportunities are given, they too can make the country proud. However, the execution seems a bit disturbing.

Laxmii is a remake of Kanchana
The film Laxmii is a remake of the Tamil film Kanchana (2011). The director, Raghav Lawrence, remains loyal to the antics included in the original films, which is why he feels cliché and outdated at times.
Instead of predicting jumps through horror comedy scares or creating horror through laughter, if you've seen Kanchana, you'll hardly be surprised at the 2020 film. A little novelty would have worked wonders. For those who have not seen the Tamil masterpiece, you can beat your heart a scene or two and do a chakali here and there. The film has very few songs except for Bum Bhole, an incredibly powerful track that gives a fart sound when played. Full marks for the choreography of the song and of course, Akshay Kumar.
THE PLOT OF LAXMII
Akshay Kumar played the role of Asif, a Muslim man who married a Hindu girl named Rashmi (Kiara Advani). Both reached Daman and arrived there on the 25th anniversary of Rashmi's parents. They see this as an opportunity to reunite Rashmi with her family, who initially refused to accept Asif as their son-in-law due to their religion. However, after they arrive at the place, Asif, who strongly believes that there is no such thing as a ghost (unlike Raghav of the 2011 film Kanchana), meets the soul of a transgender man named Laxmii, who takes revenge on her. He was unjust when he was alive. Once Asif has what it takes to be the rest of the film.
The plot moves at a comfortable pace and will keep you hooked. However, the climax feels a bit abrupt and points towards the possibility of a sequel. The sub-plots are also integrated into the main plot towards the end.

AKSHAY KUMAR POWERS THE SCRIPT
For the performance, Akshay Kumar is superb throughout the film. He owns the frame right from his first scene, when he exposes the myth of a 'Baba', who is trying to drive a soul out of a woman's body through his 'magical' lotus. The energy of the actor is unmatched and will remind you of his performance in the 2007 film Bhul Bhulaiyaa. Thirteen years later, in a script of the same genre, the actor hits the nail on the head, however. When he is near Laxmii, his body language deserves a special mention.
Kiara Advani has made the most of her role. She looks gorgeous, falls in love with her husband, tries to reconcile with her father and dances to the Burj Khalifa song.
The film has a surprise package by Sharad Kelkar. Her portrayal of Laxmii leaves an imprint. In the final few minutes of the film, he owns the show and gives a power-packed performance. Her eyes are talking and they have real feelings.
Manu Rishi Chadha as Deepak, Ashwini Kalsekar as his wife, and Ayesha Raza Mishra as Rashmi's mother added much-needed humor to the screenplay from her performance. His acting may look like it went overboard at times, but it is permissible in style.
Rajesh Sharma plays the role of the perfect father for Kiara Advani and effortlessly slips into the skin of his character.
The background score of the film is worth a mention as it creates humor as well as horror as the script demands. The VFX team did a satisfactory job. Costume designers and makeup artists deserve a mention, especially in scenes where Asif transforms into Laxmii.
To conclude, Laxmii is a perfect watch for the festival season with her family. The film has its faults but its heart is in the right place. Watch it for a great performance and the message it intends to send.
